Choosing A Memory Foam Pillow
Memory foam pillows aren't entirely like normal, traditional pillows so there are a few things you should bear in mind when choosing one.
One thing to consider is size. You can buy a memory foam pillow that looks very like the usual rectangular bed pillow but many of them are contoured. This contoured shape maximises the support given to the neck and head, particularly important if you are buying a memory foam pillow because of neck and back pain.
Something you should always check is the size. These contoured pillows are often non standard sizes so if you buy one you might find that it's smaller than you expected and is swamped by the pillow case. This is a particular problem with some of the cheaper pillows. So always double check the measurements to ensure that they'll be no unexpected shocks when you get it home, though remember that if your pillow has been vacuumed wrapped it can take up to 24 hours to expand to its full size.
Another think to consider is the density of the foam. Memory foam is much denser than normal foam and it is heat sensitive. It's the foam's reaction to heat that allows it to mould around the body in that characteristic way and the firmness creates the support. In cold situations the memory foam can feel quite solid but it should yield under your body heat. However a few people do complain about the hardness of their memory foam pillow. If you've always used and enjoyed a very soft pillow and have always hated firm pillows then a memory foam pillow is probably not for you.
For some people smell is problem. Any foam smells and memory foam is no different. It's not giving off any toxic vapours, it's simply a rather chemical smell that disappears over time. Most people will hardly notice it but if your sense of smell is on the sensitive side it would be best to unwrap your memory foam pillow and let it air for a few days. If it's nice weather you could put it outside (but not in direct sunlight) and let the air circulate around it to get rid of the smell more quickly.
Although choosing and buying a memory foam pillow takes a little thought it will last you many years and give you night after night of restful sleep.
