Travelling can be long and boring and also very uncomfortable. If you're travelling for more than a few hours the idea of taking a nap can seem very appealing just to take the edge off the general weariness of travel. But to sleep, even if it's just for a short nap, your neck and head to be secure and comfortable.

You may never have considered using a memory foam travel pillow but once you've used one you'll be wondering how you did without one before.

Imagine the typical scene with you sitting in rather an unnatural upright position on a coach, train or plane. You're feeling increasingly tired and decide to take a little nap. As the coach, train or plane moves around so do you, especially your head. Any sudden movements and your head will start rolling from side to side. Not exactly sleep inducing!

Then as you start to drift off that's when the head lolling starts when the weight of your unsupported head means that it starts drifting forwards to your chest. It's not a comfortable or natural position so your body's response is usually to snap awake and jolt the head backwards. Again this doesn't make for a pleasant nap.

And then when you wake up your neck is stiff and sore and you have to spend the next hour rubbing it to try and relieve the pain. So you've had your nap and you feel none the better for it.

The problem with trying to sleep while travelling is that it's very difficult to get your head into a comfortable position that you can sustain. To sleep well you need to have your neck and head properly supported to stop it moving around.

That's what so good about a memory foam travel pillow. The foam that moulds to the contours of your neck and head is dense but not hard. Most travel pillows are a U-shape that will fit neatly round your neck. This will stop most of the head rolling and jolting while giving proper support for the neck avoiding the usual cricks.

The only downside is the size. Memory foam travel pillows do take up a small amount of room in your luggage but if your journey is of any length and you want to be refreshed when you get to the end of it, then having to leave an extra sweater behind is a small price to pay.
